Puerta Plata or Punta Cana?
My fiancee and me are planning on going to the DR for our honeymoon in January. Which area and resort would you suggest? We would like a place we can experience the culture, lay on the beach, and a safe area. Preferably not an all inclusive so we can go out and enjoy local cuisine and not eat Americanized food at the resort. So should we go to Puerta Plata or Punta Cana? Thanks for the help.
Or any where else in the DR.
I would recommend Cabarete in Puerto Plata Provence.
Young sports minded international crowd that plays hard all day and parties all night at the clubs on the beach. You can get hotel rooms from 15 dollars and up in good safe locations.
Great restaurants once you leave the beach tourist area that are reasonably priced.
Try Bliss and the Japanese restaurant in front of Ocean Dreams as they are my favorites. Just down the road from Bliss on the same side is a hole in the wall tipical Dominican restaurant called Joannas which serves great Dominican food.
Take one day and check out Sosua and its beach and nightlife.
It is located only 25 minutes from Puerto Plata International Airport with direct flights from Miami, NY, Atlanta and Europe. Cost about 30 $ by cab.
Punta Cana is 99% all inclusives with nothing going for it other than beautiful beach. No town, no culture no nuttins.
Puerto Plata doesn’t leave much to be desired other than all inclusives as far as hotels go. Would make a nice day trip also but not to stay there.
All these places are safe. Just use your head and leave the Jewelery at home and just be as cautious as you would be at home and maybe even a little more cautious and you will be fine.
PS>I live in Cabrera and have lived in Sosua/Cabarete for 10 years. VIllas are WAY more expensive than hotels but I do recommend condos instead of hotels as they aer closer in price.
Villas in Cabrera are 5000 to 40000 a week to rent. I own two and friendly with people that own others. They are usually not convienent to nitelife and restaurants so you would need to rent a car. Same goes for the rest of the north coast. MORE EXPENSIVE.
