How to deal with a family business?
My father and mother were divorced…Dad contracted cancer 7 years later. Dad had a good insurance policy. Dad & Mom had divorce anulled. Dad & Mom plus two kids built a strong business after his cancer. Getting the business started and building the warehouse were funded by Dad. The “kids” built the building. Kids were involved of traveling and buying inventory..funded by Dad & Mom.
Dad died of cancer..Mom remarried shortly thereafter..sold all the inventory for 1/3 the cost and is now trying to sell the property that Dad had before the anullment.
Mom says “It is ALL her’s”…we had no documents drawn up for distibution of property..Dad left everything to Mom..thinking she would leave the business to his children.
Mom “blew” the inventory money on her honeymoon and is now getting a divorce.
The business made over $150,000 per year.
I am now unemployed and seeking work…while she continues to make jabs at us about having to work for a living.
I now make about around $16,000/yr
