HONEYMOON PERIOD DIABETES

HONEYMOON PERIOD DIABETES
Hi there. My fifteen year old son was diagnosed with Type 1, insulin dependent diabetes last October?

He has been brilliant this last six months, really getting to grips with testing his blood and doing his injections. We had the concept of the ‘honeymoon period’ explained to us already, about how some of the cells in the pancreas are still working at first. Well now his blood sugar is all over the place, as low as 1.6 ( 28.8 American) sometimes, and he told me it goes high as well, but not much higher than about 10 (180 American). I’m so concerned about him, and I think the community nurse who has been assigned to us is absolutely useless, because he never listens, he just loves the sound of his own voice. How do we get to see an actual doctor, and what can we do in the meantime about his wildly fluctuating blood sugar levels?

Hi Georgie. I’m type 1 since I was 16 I used injections until 6 years ago when my sugars went sky high now matter how good I was about insulin, food and diet. The insulin pump made a world of difference but still this disease can be quite confusing. There are many factors that can effect blood sugars, stress, illness and changing needs as we get older. I don’t know much about your health care system over there but really he should be seeing an Endocrinologist or a diabetes educator they can help so much. Best of Luck hope you find the answers you need.
