Weather in New Zealand end April/early May?

We are planning to go for out honeymoon then – is this a good time to go there. We are planning on visiting both North and South Islands and aren’t interested in skiing. I know there are websites around that give statistics, but I wanted to know from people who stay there/have visited during this time whether they suggest we go some other time. Is it going to be rainy/chilly most of the time?
Currently we are planning to go to Auckland (1 day), Rotorua (1 day), Christchurch and then drive around to a few places around Christchurch (5-6 days). Appreciate the help – thanks!

I don’t know about the North Island. I think it is reasonably warm. In Central Otago, it can be beautiful durring the day but it gets quite cold at night. A couple years ago it snowed in mid april. So it can also be not much fun in the day. Personaly, I would try to go a little earlier. The weather is just too unpredictable at that time.
