Honeymoons are too often an afterthought to the planning of the wedding itself, when, in terms of memories, they are of equal, if not greater, importance.
Initially decide what your objectives are for the time you’ll be away and what you can and can’t live without. What parts of the world interest you? Do you want to relax or be active? What is most important to you? Cost, adventure, sightseeing, weather, etc.
Trips to exclusive islands or resorts are traditionally popular, for obvious reasons. Such trips mean that you can spend quality time together whilst relaxing from the hectic schedule of the previous few months and taking in beautiful surroundings.
Another option is to take a cruise; they give you the same quiet, relaxing time whilst also making it possible to visit a host of different locations. If you would have a preference for a more action-packed honeymoon, you could try a mountain resort or an adventure travel trip (such as backpacking or a safari).
As for honeymoon locations, these are some of the most popular: Argentina, Bali, Bermuda, Caribbean, Fiji, France, French Polynesia, Madagascar, Mauritius, New Zealand, Spain, Thailand.
Whatever kind of location and honeymoon you choose, try to make reservations at least 6 months in advance to ensure that you’ll have the pick of the rooms, and can begin planning for your time away. See if there is a ‘romance’ or ‘honeymoon’ package available to enhance your time away; romantic extras like penthouse rooms, iced champagne and bouquets of flowers can make it even more memorable.
As soon as your hotel is arranged, starting researching and booking restaurant seats, tickets, tours, and various other activities that require advance reservations, particularly so if you’re traveling in the summer months (bear in mind that different locations will have different peak seasons). Try not to over-plan though as plenty of free time should be left available, in the first few days especially, in which simply enjoying the company of one another should be your main aim.
Your overall objective should be to make your honeymoon stand out from any other vacation. In addition to normal vacation items, try taking some fun extras with you, like candles, lingerie and romantic music.
