Where to stay in Thailand?

I am going to Thailand for 4 nights on my own and I intend to head to one of the islands. I have never been before but I am craving a relaxing few days lying on a beach with my book. Ideally I want to stay somewhere that I can go from my bungalow to the beach without being hassled by millions of sellers etc. However, whilst I am looking for a relaxing holiday I would like to be in a position to head to a bar for some drinks in the evening. I definitely don’t want an Ibiza style nightlife, but I also don’t want to be in the middle of hundreds of honeymooning couples so a place with a nice mix of solo travellers, couples, families etc would be ideal. Any ideas gratefully received.
I don’t want to go to Bangkok. I want to go to one of the Islands.
