HONEYMOON APRIL 2007

HONEYMOON APRIL 2007
Born in USA, Want to go to Mexico for honeymoon, have a felony?

Hi!
I live in the USA (born and raised). In 2003 I plead guilty to “Complicity to aggravated drug trafficking”, a fourth degree felony. I served 3 years of adult probation (sucessfully) and have no further criminal issues since. I was released from probation in 2007 with a “full release of my rights as a citizen” ie: I can vote etc…

My question is this: I am getting married in April and HOPING to go to Mexico for my honeymoon, can I get a passport? And will I be able to enter Mexico AND re-enter the United States?

I’m nervous and uneasy about this and would appreciate any information!

You shouldn’t have any problems getting a passport. You apply in person at the Post Office:

http://www.travel.state.gov/passport/get/first/first_830.html

You need to go ahead and apply as it takes about 6 weeks for the passport to arrive in the mail.

You might want to also get a Passport Card in addition to a Passport Book. The cards are only valid for ground/sea travel within North America (including Mexico), so you can’t use it for travel if you are flying to Mexico. However, the cards make great secondary ID.

The USA often restricts entry by international visitors if they have a criminal record (depending on the offense), but it doesn’t apply to US citizens. US citizens can leave and re-enter the USA at will unless under some sort of current court restriction.

Most countries do not ask or care if you have a criminal record when visiting as a tourist. I have not been to Mexico but I very much doubt if it’s an issue.

I hope you have a great Honeymoon!
