(&47/day for cottage), but what are other factors?
yes I visited Kerala a couple of years back … I looked at the website you’ve listed and I see it’s about Kasaragod
we were travelling down the coast on the train and we stopped off at Kasaragod … it’s a lovely little place with a gorgeous beach, true, but at the time we were there it was definitely a bit “off the beaten track” … the bigger tourist destinations were further south in Cochin and Trivandrum
suppose it depends on what you’re looking for … I had the best pineapple smoothy I ever tasted in Kasaragod, and the people were really friendly (cos they didn’t see that many tourists at the time) and I know they were trying to promote the area for tourism … but if you’re travelling from Europe I’d look very carefully at the travel arrangements, like what airport you fly into and how long it takes to get to your destination and how you get there (by road, by train?) … oh, by the way, I also saw the biggest potholes in the road of the whole trip there too whereas the train is convenient and easy
we did the boat trip around the lagoons in the Cochin area … that was an unforgettable experience and I enjoyed it thoroughly, but I must admit there was a thriving trade in those boat trips and you weren’t exactly the only people doing it
we travelled down the coast by train all the way from Bombay to Kanyakumari at the very tip, and I liked Kerala the best of all the states we visited … you’ve got to remember though the further south you travel the hotter it gets … I loved Kanyakumari but I’m not a hot weather person and after our visit there I was suffering from heat sickness
as for how expensive things are … I’d thoroughly recommend you book the absolute minimum from this end … once you get there things are very easy to arrange and, as long as you learn to haggle in the traditional manner, you’ll find it costs an awful lot less than booking from here would do … any Indian businessman right from the hawkers on the street upwards knows exactly what the rate of exchange is and what we normally expect to pay in Europe or the US and will quote you a rate you think sounds reasonable, whereas the average Indian middle class person would expect to pay half or a quarter of that price
you’ll find no trouble getting around using English … education in Kerala is one of the best in India and there are loads of English-medium schools there (i.e. schools where the lessons are taught in English) and the people are not as aggressively commercial as in some places … I found the people very easy to talk to and had some lovely conversations … one of my abiding memories of Kerala was crocodiles of smartly dressed children in uniform going to school each morning
