I would like to book a honeymoon holiday to the Maldives and Sri
Lanka – how long would it be best to spend in each country, what are the bast regions to visit in each country – which is the best or cheap value for money tour operator or airline to book with?

How long – 7 days in each country is common, although 14+7 is better ! Spend longer in Maldives if you want to relax, or longer in SL if you want adventure !
Best regions –
Maldives – islands are basically all very similar, differing in price & luxury, so choose one that suits your budget.
SL – needs more planning, depending on what you want, but it can be quite tiring as the road system is not so well developed. As a minimum, you could go to : Colombo – Negombo – Kandy – Nuwara Eliya – Sigirya, with an option to Anuradhapura & Polonnaruwa if you like history & ancient ruins. There are plenty stop offs – temples, spice & orchid gardens, elephants. If you’re wanting a full 7+ days of travel, then consider adding the southern ex-Portugese town of Galle, and a ’safari’ to one of the animal reserves. The way it works is – you are assigned your own car + driver for the full duration of your trip (or may share a ‘people carrier’ car or minibus with another couple, if you have the same itinerary).
Tour Operators – Kuoni & First Choice (TUI) are popular. If you want the best value for money, you might find that visiting only 1 of the countries is cheaper.
